David Schwartz was principal violist of the Cleveland and Detroit Symphonies and the Puerto Rico Symphony under Pablo Casals. His orchestral career also includes appointments in the All-American Youth Orchestra under Stokowski and the NBC Symphony under Arturo Toscanini. During World War II he served as Lead Viola in Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force Band. He has extensive quartet experience, having been a member of the Fine Arts, Paganini, and American String Quartets; during his tenure as Associate Professor at Yale University he was a founding member of the Yale String Quartet. In 1963 he co-founded the Stanford Chamber Group in Stamford, Connecticut. His recordings include Live at 80!, a remarkable album of sixteen encore pieces, in celebration of his eightieth birthday.
