Benjamin Coelho, assistant professor of bassoon at the University of Iowa, is completing the D.M.A. degree at Indiana University, with minors in music theory and Latin American studies. He received the M.M. from the Manhattan School of Music, New York, in 1986 and the B.A. with honors from SUNY at Purchase, New York, in 1984. He was previously associate instructor at Indiana University and professor of chamber music, New York Youth Symphony Orchestra, 1995-1996. Coelho was tenured bassoon and chamber music professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from 1989 to 1996. Since coming to Iowa he has presented clinics and concertized throughout the US, Canada, France, and South America, taught at Indiana University, and earned grants to complete a solo CD and a method book. He has been very active promoting, commissioning and performing Latin American works featuring bassoon.
