Soprano Annette Betanski has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe and her native Canada. Her abilities as a performer range from recital and concert singing to opera and chamber music. Ms. Betanski began her musical and performance education at the age of nine when she became a member of the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus. As a child she performed with the Canadian Opera Company at the O’Keefe Center, and was a featured young soloist at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall and Massey Hall. Ms. Betanski began her formal vocal studies later, at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto where she obtained an Associateship and won numerous awards and honors including “Outstanding Performer” in Canada’s Contemporary Showcase Competition. She continued her studies at McGill University where she was a member of the McGill Contemporary Ensemble and earned the prestigious Artist Diploma in vocal performance.
Ms. Betanski made her operatic debut in 1999 as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni as part of the New Opera Festival of Rome. She was Despina in Cosi Fan Tutte at the Silesian State Opera in the Czech Republic. In the United States, Ms. Betanski has been a guest soloist at the Tanglewood Music Festival in the Prelude Concert Series. She has appeared with the Boston Bel Canto Opera Company, Cambridge Lieder and Opera Society, and as soloist with Chorus pro Musica. She has been a featured performer in New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee Music Festival, and has appeared in chamber music concerts with esteemed members and principal players of the Montreal Symphony and Boston Symphony Orchestras. Ms. Betanski has been a featured artist on CBC Radio. She has recorded a CD of music for voice and harp, with chamber pieces featuring members of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players. The disc is scheduled for release in the fall of 2001. Ms. Betanski is also a voice-over artist and has appeared on the Champion Records label in recording projects that are dedicated to educating and entertaining children with classical music. Most recently she sang the role of Rosina in The Giggle of Seville, a children’s adaptation of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.
James Sommerville and Annette Betanski are married, and reside in Boston, Massachusetts.
